Kau Tapen and Villa Maria Lodges have a commanding position on the right bank of the Rio Grande in Argentina. Both offer something very different in terms of lodges, but what they both have in common is access to amazing sea trout fishing! These are among the most revered and oldest lodges on the river, with an envious track-record. If you’re after great fishing but also an unsurpassed level of service when you return to the lodge, then read on.
Villa Maria Lodge is located on the lower river and is the first lodge to greet the returning sea trout from the ocean. As it is located below major tributaries such as the Menendez, it is a bigger river on this section, making it well suited to those who prefer to fish with double handers. It also particularly suited to fishing in the earlier part of the season, but can continue to fish well throughout the season, especially if the river remains low. The lodge is fantastic, accommodating just six rods per week. It has the main lodge, but also the riverside lodge, which is utilised for lunch and siesta, reducing transfer time and maximising your time on the water.

Kau Tapen Lodge is located above Villa Maria on the Rio Grande, with its water beginning immediately above where the Rio Menendez enters the Rio Grande. Not only does the lodge have access to a huge amount of great water on the Rio Grande, it also has access to the best water on the Rio Menendez – a great little river in its own right and always worth a visit. The lodge accommodates ten rods per week, with single rooms as standard and is by far one of the nicest lodges on the whole river, if not the whole of Argentina! Beautiful rooms, great service and amazing food – make sure you bring a bigger belt…
