Factfile

Around a three-hour drive from Reykjavik along the west coast brings you to one of the prettiest and most prolific rivers in the whole of Iceland. A truly special place and a hitch angler’s dream!

Atlantic salmon are the main attraction and the annual catch makes it one of the most prolific rivers in Iceland – currently ranked #6 of all rivers in Iceland!

Overview

The Laxa i Dolum is one of the most prolific salmon rivers in the whole of Iceland – ranked #6 in 2024. During the 2024 season, it produced a staggering 1,353 salmon to just six rods! Given the size of the river and fishing pressure (or lack of) this is an amazing statistic.

The lodge is located around three hours from Reykjavik, in the North-West corner of Iceland. It’s in an extremely secluded valley, close to the village of Budardalur.

This is truly a special experience when it comes to fishing in Iceland with availability being extremely rare due to the demand and also fact that anglers rarely relinquish their slots over consecutive seasons.

Fishing

The Laxa i Dolum river is a great all-rounder, producing a good grilse run, but also a healthy percentage of larger salmon too.

It is a relatively small river, with a single hander being perfect, especially when fishing the hitch etc. the river is easily covered with a single hander and the single hander will allow for more precise fishing. There is an abundance of small pools and pocket water to fish, which, again, suits the single hander. You only need a floating line for the Dolum, making the fishing extremely pleasant.

The riverbank is fairly rocky in most places, with bedrock dominating some pools. However, there are no canyon sections, so access in general is good along the Dolum.

It is a prolific river, with 1,353 salmon being landed to just 6 rods over the 2024 season. A quick flick through the catch log book shows a reoccurring theme; the vast majority are caught on hitch and small flies – very pleasant fishing. A small amount of fishing tackle is available for purchase at the lodge, including pertinent flies.

accommodation and pricing

The lodge is located on the lower reaches of the Dolum, a stone’s throw from the river and alongside a small stream with a waterfall – a very picturesque setting. It’s in a very quiet and secluded valley, where you can truly escape.
