The Highlands Lodge is an amazing, remote fishing destination pretty much in the centre of Iceland. Almost no people and very little development. Just crystal clear rivers teeming with wild fish.
Sight fishing is often possible with either dry fly or nymph. Both the trout and the char reach a good size and are incredibly strong given the year-round cold water, which you can literally drink with your hands without a filter.
The Highlands fishing and lodge is located in the heart of Iceland. With its unrivalled beauty and stunning scenery, the Highlands offer you a unique experience. Here you can truly become one with nature as the Highlands are largely untouched and uninhabited. Amidst all of this beauty live the brown trout and arctic char. This trip offers a unique opportunity to get to know the Icelandic Highlands and to do some world-class fishing in one trip. In the evenings you can either relax in the lodge, fish the creeks right outside the lodge, or take a sightseeing trip to the numerous waterfalls, canyons, and glaciers in the Highlands and of course take an unforgettable thermal swim in the hot spring stream in Landmannalaugar.
There is a lot of water to explore, from nearby rivers and streams, to faraway lakes and largely unexplored watercourses. You can largely dictate the type of water you would like to fish by having a chat with your guide the previous evening. During your stay, you will target brown trout and char.
Some water will only have trout present, but most waters have both present and in good numbers. In addition, the water is usually very clear, which provides amazing sight fishing opportunities.
Depending on the time of year, you may be lucky and time the lupins blossoming along the riverbank – this is special to witness and brings the whole area alive with colour. They normally start to blossom around mid-June.
There is flexibility in terms of length of stay at The Highlands Lodge. Not only that, you do not have to go fishing everyday – many choose to take a day or two to visit the local waterfalls and explore the area in general.
The prime of the fishing is between mid-June and August. There is a flexible length of stay, with a 3 day stay costing US$3,995 and a 5 day stay costing US$6,000. These prices include a twin room at the lodge, meals, soft drinks, guiding (two anglers per guide) and transfers to / from the lodge. You can upgrade to a single room and single based guide for US$8,500 based on a 5 day stay. It should be noted that there is good Wi-Fi at the lodge along with mobile / cell phone service. Flies are available for purchase at the lodge and the lodge can supply waders, boots and all tackle necessary at a cost
