Los Roques Island is located around half an hour flight from the mainland in Venezuela. From the island, you have access to a vast saltwater fishery, ranging from reef structure, mangroves, through to miles of wadable flats and the famous ‘pancake flats’.
An incredibly variety rich destination, with bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, triggerfish, parrotfish and more present. Suitable for beginners and experienced anglers due to different levels of challenges available each day.
Located 120 km north of Caracas, Venezuela, Los Roques is a National Park incorporating a collection of some 350 islands and cays. Referred to as an archipelago, it is technically an unspoiled atoll that spans 36 km east to west and 25 km north to south, making it the largest marine park in the Caribbean Sea. Most areas are easily accessed by boat, maximising your fishing time – some days will literally start with you fishing in the harbour! With a 45 minute boat ride being the exception rather than the rule.
The area consists of one major island, El Gran Roque, surrounded by a few dozen or so lesser, mostly uninhabited islands and as many as a hundred smaller mangrove and cays. Surrounding these small land masses are coral reefs and hundreds of beautiful pristine flats, which forms a perfect environment for fly fishing.
Crystal clear and calm waters, magnificent coral beds, diverse and varied flats, miles of sandy beaches and hundreds of smaller mangrove and cays, all with incredibly diverse environment and natural beauty.
Due to its beauty and the wide variety of seabirds and rich aquatic life, among other factors, the Venezuelan government declared Los Roques a National Park in 1972 and then in the mid 90’s, even more environmentally conscious regulations were enacted to protect the overall environment of the entire Archipelago.
Los Roques is scarcely populated, having about 2,000 permanent inhabitants mostly on the main Island. It is very safe and popular among foreign tourists and Venezuelans alike. Colourful lodges and private houses are the main constructions. No cars and the streets are sand, which is part of its charm.
Los Roques has gained the reputation as being one of the best fly fishing destinations in the Caribbean, and deservedly so. Its great fishing with easy access (but a remote area from civilisation) have made it a popular destination among anglers from across the world.
Traditionally, Los Roques has been considered as one of the best bonefish destinations in the world, but it also offers a great variety of other saltwater game fish.
Los Roques is an exclusive destination and considered as a perfect Caribbean retreat for couples that happens to host some world class saltwater fly fishing. The numbers of bonefish are incredible and you will find them all around the flats with plenty of daily shots, offering and incredible numbers of bonefish with a very solid average size of 3-5 pounds.
However, the main strength of the fishing in Los Roques is around the variety. There are tarpon from 10 to 80 pounds frequently landed. Baby and juvenile tarpon in lagoons, mangroves and others areas as well as big tarpon rolling in the channels and deeper flats and in others areas is always a great possibility.
Permit, are present in some areas of Los Roques. They are not standard permit. They can grow to weights of 20-40 pounds! If you fish for them, you generally have multiple opportunities across your stay.
Becoming very popular lately, there is an area where you will see good size triggerfish in coral reef in very decent numbers. Even though it has the same eating habits as the permit, it is less spooky but very tricky as well. There are likewise parrotfish in these areas, which are also a challenge to hook.
Snook are also present in some lagoons. Other common available species at Los Roques include a variety of snappers and hard fighting jacks, blue runners, barracuda, Spanish mackerel. Outside the reef, you can search also for blue water species such as wahoo, tuna, bonito, marlin and swordfish.
The beautiful posada where you are located during your stay has some twelve private rooms in total (a mixture of single, twin, and family rooms), great air conditioning and a ceiling fan, hot water, safe box, and good Wi-Fi. There is also great mobile phone service on the island, which includes 3G.
The lodge enjoys an extremely quiet and ventilated position. The posada has open spaces arranged on two levels, mainly of natural tones with furniture in teak. It has a large rooftop terrace where meals are often served, but it also serves as a great area to relax in the evening after a day on the water.
The food is amazing and largely Italian influenced. You will never be left hungry. Dishes often incorporate delicious, fresh seafood.
The lodge is just a five minute walk from the airport and one minute from the beach where you start and end your fishing days.
