La Zona is one of South America’s most exclusive golden dorado fishing experiences. Situated in the tailwaters immediately below the Salto Grande Dam on the Uruguay River, this highly restricted fishery has earned an international reputation for producing exceptional numbers of large dorado and numerous fly and conventional tackle records.
Unlike traditional river programmes where anglers cover large stretches of water, La Zona focuses on a concentrated area of highly oxygenated, food-rich current where dorado gather in remarkable numbers. Strict access limitations mean only a handful of anglers can fish the zone at any one time, creating an exceptionally exclusive experience.
Combined with comfortable accommodation, professional guides and first-class equipment, La Zona represents one of the premier dorado destinations available anywhere in the world.
The fishery centres around the turbulent tailwaters below the Salto Grande Dam where powerful currents create ideal conditions for large dorado. Constant water movement concentrates baitfish and creates feeding opportunities that attract some of the biggest and most aggressive fish in the Uruguay River system.
Fishing takes place from specially equipped 21-foot bass boats, with two anglers per guide. The programme is designed around six-hour guided fishing sessions, allowing anglers to maximise time in the most productive water while avoiding fatigue.
La Zona has become legendary amongst dorado anglers due to its incredible consistency and its history of producing trophy fish. Many anglers consider this fishery to offer some of the best opportunities anywhere in South America for targeting truly exceptional golden dorado.
Both fly anglers and lure fishermen are exceptionally well catered for, with premium tackle available as part of the programme.
Guests stay at a local Hotel (Spa&Resort) located just minutes from the fishery. The comfortable resort provides a relaxing base between fishing sessions and offers significantly higher levels of comfort than many remote fishing operations.
All guests enjoy private accommodation along with access to the resort’s facilities and dedicated hospitality areas used exclusively by programme participants.
The short transfer time between hotel and dock allows anglers to spend less time travelling and more time enjoying the experience.
Meals are served within the programme and include breakfast, lunch and dinner each day. Guests also enjoy an open bar with wine, beer and selected spirits included throughout their stay.
The combination of quality dining, comfortable surroundings and attentive service creates a premium experience that complements the world-class fishing.
After a day battling powerful dorado in the tailwaters, the resort provides the perfect environment to relax and prepare for the following day’s fishing.
La Zona can be accessed via either Buenos Aires, Argentina, or Montevideo, Uruguay. Upon arrival, guests are transferred to Salto, a journey of approximately five hours by road.
Private charter flight options are also available for those wishing to minimise travel time.
FishTravel can assist with all international flights, domestic arrangements and additional travel requirements before or after your fishing programme.
La Zona operates throughout the year, with different fishing schedules utilised depending on daylight hours and seasonal conditions.
The programme accommodates larger groups during the southern hemisphere summer months when extended daylight allows additional fishing sessions. Fishing remains productive throughout the year, making La Zona one of the few truly year-round dorado destinations in South America.
