This is an opportunity to take the entire river and lodge exclusively for your group, with a maximum of just three rods fishing at any one time.
The cost is £9,000 for the entire group, or just £2,250 per person based on four anglers sharing the fishing.
For anyone looking to experience an Icelandic salmon river privately, at a considerably lower cost than prime-season fishing, this represents exceptional value.
LATE-SEASON SALMON FISHING
September offers a very different experience to fishing the Svarlbardsa during its prime weeks of late July and August.
By the middle of September, a large proportion of the season’s salmon run will already be in the river. There should therefore be plenty of fish distributed throughout the system, from the lower reaches to the beautiful canyon water and upper pools.
However, it is important to be clear about what late-season fishing means.
Very few of these salmon are likely to be fresh from the sea.
Many will have been resident for some time and will consequently be taking on their autumn colours.
For anglers whose priority is catching silver, newly arrived salmon, earlier dates are the better choice. However, for those who simply enjoy fishing for salmon, exploring a beautiful river and having a large number of fish present, these September dates offer a fascinating – and extremely affordable – alternative.
AN ENTIRE ICELANDIC SALMON RIVER TO YOURSELVES
The Svarlbardsa is a relatively small, crystal-clear river in the remote North-East of Iceland.
Despite its size, it has an impressive salmon run. The river produced 429 salmon during the 2024 season to just three rods. 394 in 2025, and already on 197 for 2026 (as of mid-August)! Including an incredible fish of 103cm!
There are a few larger pools, but much of the attraction lies in searching the numerous smaller pockets, channels and runs where salmon distribute themselves throughout the river.
With such a huge amount of water available to just three rods, you are never short of somewhere new to explore.
THE NEW SVARLBARDSA LODGE
The superb new lodge sits within a stone’s throw of the river and provides a wonderfully comfortable base for the trip.
There are four twin bedrooms, with accommodation available for up to eight guests in total.
The lodge is self-catering, making this an ideal option for an intact group of friends who want the freedom to fish, eat and relax to their own schedule.
THREE RODS – FOUR ANGLERS
Although the river fishes a maximum of three rods at any one time, we particularly recommend taking the trip as a group of four.
There is so much fishing available that rod sharing works extremely well.
With four anglers rotating across three rods, everyone still receives plenty of fishing while also having time to relax at the lodge, explore the area or simply take a break.
At £9,000 for the entire river and lodge, this brings the cost down to only:
£2,250 per person – based on four anglers sharing three rods.
The lodge can accommodate larger groups too, including non-anglers. They can attend at no extra charge, helping to make the overall cost even better value for money.

GETTING THERE
The usual journey is to fly domestically from Reykjavik to Akureyri, collect a hire car and then drive approximately three hours north-east to the lodge.
It is a spectacular journey in its own right, following Iceland’s northern coastline through some wonderfully remote countryside.
Supplies for your stay can be purchased in Akureyri or Husavik en route.
A VERY DIFFERENT WAY TO FISH ICELAND
These dates won’t suit everyone.
If your dream is to catch a bright silver Icelandic salmon fresh from the sea, we would recommend travelling earlier in the season – please make contact if you would like to secure something for the 2027 season.
But if your priorities are having plenty of salmon in the river, exclusive access to miles of fishing, a superb lodge and exceptional value for money, then 13–16 September is a very interesting proposition.
