If you’re looking for some of the best sea trout fishing in the world (and I do not say that lightly as a sea trout addict) without having to fly to Argentina, then do not overlook this absolute gem in Iceland.
During FishTravel’s exploratory visit in 2023, we were blown away at what this lodge has to offer. The size and number of the sea trout were incredible – as good as anything we had experienced in Argentina. It is, however, very different to Argentina in many ways. Two big advantages is the short flight time from the UK or mainland Europe, and secondly the myriad of different waters you got to visit and fish during your stay, which really kept things interesting. Depending on the week and time of year, you could be fishing the Geirlandsa, Fossalar, Vatnamot, and more.
BATTLE HILL LODGE – ICELAND
Battle Hill Lodge is located up a quiet farm track, leaving the noise of the nearest road and light pollution from the nearest town a good distance away. It is a very peaceful and relaxing place to stay.
The lodge is modern, having a separate dining and living room, then six bedrooms between ten anglers. The rooms are not en-suite, so please take that into consideration (there are two shared bathrooms). There is good mobile service at the lodge and the lodge has a great Wi-Fi signal throughout.
Battle Hill Lodge has an ample supply of suitable flies for your stay, along with a few key tackle items. Your stay will include all meals and soft drinks, but alcohol is charged for – they have beer and wine available for purchase.
The days are split into a morning and afternoon session and you fish a different beat or river as you change session. Lunch is provided on the riverbank, to maximise your time on the water. The fishing is extremely varied, from crystal clear, stunning rivers carving their path through canyons, through to wide, almost estuary-like rivers that have a glacial hue. During your stay you get to rotate through everything the lodge has to offer; there should be something to suit most tastes.
The size and number of the sea trout is extraordinary. You will often see the fish in the pools – whether they will take is another matter. Sea trout of over a metre are caught every season! A sea trout of this length would be closer to 30 lbs than 20lbs…
While the focus is on sea trout, most of the rivers also hold some charr and Atlantic salmon, adding an extra element of excitement and intrigue to your stay.
FishTravel has been to the lodge and fished the rivers. We will accurately advise on exactly what you need to take tackle wise to maximise your time and experience. The majority of the fishing will be with single-handed 10ft #7-8 rods. However, some rivers will also call for a switch rod and even a 12-13ft double-hander. FishTravel will also advise on lines, flies, tackle disinfection etc. leaving nothing to chance.
