Overview

The camp is located around five hours drive south of Puerto Montt in Chile. It is located in the Los Lagos region. From Puerto Montt, you take a ferry to the port of Hornopiren before a private boat meets you and takes you the rest of the journey to camp – it’s a beautiful and captivating journey.

Whilst other species are present in the river, the main focus and attraction are the king salmon, of which the river receives a sizeable run. The fish average within the 25-50lb range.

The camp accommodates just six anglers per week, across three twin roomed cabins – all with en-suite bathrooms. Your stay is on an all-inclusive basis, with the camp being extremely comfortable and well appointed given its remote location.

Fishing

The main king salmon run at Austral Kings arrive from mid-January to late March. During this time, the river undergoes an enchanting transformation as the fish arrive, creating an exhilarating spectacle for anglers. During this time, thousands of magnificent fish embark on a journey upstream to spawn, bringing life and vibrancy to the surrounding environment.

Austral Kings Camp is ideally nestled right along the riverbank. This prime location allows anglers to easily explore along the shoreline and experience the thrill of fishing in a stunning natural setting. An additional ten kilometers of the river can be accessed by jetboat, revealing breathtaking vistas and additional fishing opportunities.

Whether casting from a boat or wading in the different river structures, there are plenty of opportunities to swing flies for the King Salmon.

Since they stop feeding in freshwater, success relies on triggering their territorial instincts or provoking reaction strikes. Kings are typically found at depths of 10 to 30 feet, so precise control over your fly’ sink rate and presentation is essential.

Anglers rotate between upper and lower river beats, fishing close to the camp some days and traveling to more distant spots on others, each offering unique challenges and chances to catch these impressive fish that average in the 25-50 lbs range.
